Stewardship

Stewardship is a rather popular term used by Catholics when religious leaders want their followers to give something. It is often associated with the words "tithe," "generosity," and "money."   Many people do not fully understand that a parish is also a business.  In order to offer programs, the parish needs to maintain the church, offices, meeting facilities, etc.  Just like your home we need to pay gas, electric, water, and sewage bills.  We need to purchase  missalettes, hymnals, candles, etc.  We need to pay for office supplies, computers, websites, copying expenses, etc.  We need to maintain the property such as buildings, grass, gardens, parking lots etc.  

The annual expense budget for St Thomas More is approximately $ 450,000.   And, so yes we do need to ask for your financial support.

One of the most the most frequently asked questions we get is how much should I tithe.  Biblical teachings tell us that answer is 10%.  The ten percent is divided into three categories:
  1. 5% to St Thomas More,
  2. 1% to the Indianapolis Archdiocese Annual Catholic Appeal, and,
  3. 4% to other charities of your choice (BUT, we at St Thomas More would not be disappointed should you choose to donate some or all of that amount to St Thomas More:)
But, stewardship also includes time and talent.  It is said that it takes a village to raise a child.  Well is takes a faith community to raise a parish. We need teachers and assistants for Sunday School , which we call Faith Formation.  We need volunteers to help with Applefest, which is our largest fundraiser.  We need  business managers, financial experts, computer experts, marketing pros, etc. to help us manage the resources of the parish.  We need altar servers, eucharistic ministers, lectors, audio/video media operators, musicians, singers, and ushers to assist with liturgy of the Mass.
